Some Habits are Hard to Start
A few weeks ago, I posted that I was going to try to start a good habit for the month of April. My good habit was to get up earlier each day. I haven’t gotten up QUITE as early as I wanted (5:00 a.m. on work days and 7:00 a.m. when I’m not working), but I have made some improvements.
I really do enjoy getting up earlier because I have the house to myself. It gives me some much needed quiet time to think and plan my day. I used to get some “me time” in the evenings after the kids went to bed. Now that they are older, they are up later. Also, Mom will often stay up in the evenings until I go to bed.
There are a lot of things on the Fly Lady website that I try to follow. Part of the routine that she recommends is to get up and “get dressed to the shoes.” That was always the part of her plan I had the most trouble with. I’m the kind of person who likes to gradually start my day, not jump in headfirst.
So, I’ll keep plugging away and keep trying to get a little jump on my day by getting up earlier. Of course, it would be easier for me to get up if I’m not up late on the computer…

It’s good that you are making small improvements - don’t stress about the fact that you don’t achieve this everyday. I agree that getting dressed as soon as you get up is a good idea. I also have the tendency to ease myself slowly into the day, but, recently, I have found that if I make an effort to shower and dress as soon as I get up, the day seems to go so much better and I achieve so much more (I don’t know why!)
By the way, thanks for introducing me to the flylady in a previous post - I like her website - I just need to put more of it into practice!!!
Best wishes,
Roz
I have been out of the workforce now for over a year, I have just this week started attending college Monday through Thursday, starting at 9 am. It IS very difficult for me to get going in the mornings now since I am not usually an early riser. I suffer from insomnia so I have gotten into a very bad habit of not going to bed until 1 or 2 and sometimes 3 am. I have had to break that habit and force myself to go to bed by 10 or 11. I feel fine once I take my shower and get rolling, but I totally understand how you feel!
Perservere my dear !
Roz - I’m glad you found the Fly Lady helpful. She’s got great ideas and her stories always make me feel good.
lilysgramma - Yes, it’s so hard to get into a new routine. I bet after I few weeks of class, you’ll settle in. At least it’s only four days and you can sleep in the other three.
